Everything you need to know as an employer about the SRK recognition process for foreign physiotherapists: the steps, the timeline and the requirements.

Diploma recognition for foreign physiotherapists in Switzerland: what you need to know as an employer

As a practice owner or HR manager in Swiss healthcare, you know the challenge: there is a growing shortage of qualified physiotherapists. That is why more and more practices are looking for talented professionals from abroad. But before these healthcare providers can work for you, their diploma must be recognized by the Swiss Red Cross (SRK). This recognition process is essential, but can be complex and time-consuming without the right knowledge and guidance.

Understanding the Recognition Process

First of all, it's good to remember that the profession of physiotherapist is protected by law in Switzerland. This means that only professionals with an officially recognized qualification are allowed to hold this title and carry out the work. For your practice, it is essential to respect these regulations and understand what steps your potential foreign employees need to take.

The legal basis for SRK recognition

The recognition of foreign diplomas has different procedures, depending on the country of origin:

  • For EU/EEA diplomas the principle of equivalence based on European guidelines applies. However, an individual assessment remains necessary, specifically looking at the content and duration of the course compared to the Swiss standard.
  • For diplomas from outside Europe the SRK follows a more extensive assessment process, which often results in additional qualification requirements. The process is thorough and detailed, as the SRK must ensure that all professionals meet the same high standards as in Switzerland and Europe.

The recognition process step by step: what your candidate goes through

As an employer, it is valuable to understand what steps your potential employee needs to take. This way, you can set realistic expectations about start times and possibly offer support.

1. PreCheck by the SRK

The first step for your candidate is to request a PreCheck at the SRK. During this initial assessment, the SRK determines whether the diploma is in principle eligible for recognition. This process provides an early indication and prevents unnecessary time and costs if recognition is not feasible.
As an employer, you can support candidates by reminding them of the importance of this first step and informing them about what they need to do so.

2. Compiling the file after a positive PreCheck

After a positive PreCheck, your candidate must compile a complete file with all necessary documents:

  • Detailed study documents (diploma, grade lists)
  • Detailed description of the course content with exact numbers of teaching hours per subject
  • Proof of any work experience
  • B2 language certificate (don't worry: this can also be delivered later)
  • Personal documents (ID, etc.)

All documents must be professionally translated. As an employer, you can help find certified translators or provide other practical support.

3. Submission and payment

After compiling the file, your candidate must pay the invoice for the recognition process and submit all documents to the SRK. This is a crucial step, where completeness and accuracy are essential to prevent delays.

4. The assessment by the SRK

Once the file has been submitted, the SRK will start a detailed analysis that looks at:

  • Theoretical knowledge (anatomy, physiology, pathology, etc.)
  • Practical skills developed during internships
  • Total length and load of study, which in Switzerland is 4 years (5400 hours), including approximately 3960 hours of theoretical-practical training and 1440 hours of clinical internships

This review process officially takes 3 to 4 months, but can sometimes take longer in practice. As an employer, it is important to take this into account in your staff planning.

5. The decision and any compensatory measures

After the assessment, your candidate will receive an official decision with one of these results:

  • Full recognition: The course is considered equivalent and the candidate can work directly with you as a physiotherapist, provided that the language requirements are met.
  • Partial recognition with compensatory measures: Substantial differences were found between the foreign course and what is required in Switzerland. Compensatory measures may be necessary if:
    • The duration of training is at least one year shorter than in Switzerland
    • The content of the course differs substantially from the Swiss standard
    • Certain professional activities that are part of the field in Switzerland were not included in the original course

These compensatory measures may include:

  • An adaptation course
  • An adaptation course with additional training
  • An eligibility test
  • A language course to achieve the required level of language proficiency

As an employer, you can play an important role in this by, for example, offering internships and in-house courses within your own practice - a solution that benefits both you and the candidate!

Realistic timeline for an SRK diploma recognition

If you want to hire a foreign physiotherapist and do it all yourself, it's important to have realistic expectations about the timeline. The whole process takes time, even if everything runs smoothly:

  • First 2 months: Your candidate goes through the PreCheck and is busy with paperwork, translations and collecting all necessary documents.
  • Month 3-6: The SRK reviews all submitted documents. This phase officially lasts 3-4 months, but in practice it runs out regularly.
  • Month 7-12: If compensatory measures are needed, another 3-6 months will be added.

So plan well ahead! Without proper guidance, you should count on at least 6 months, but often 9-12 months from the first contact to the actual start. With our help you can often shorten this timeline considerably and, above all, make it much more predictable.

What employers often encounter when it comes to the recognition of foreign physios
  • Planning uncertainty: It is often difficult to predict exactly when a foreign candidate can actually start. Permits, diploma recognition and personal moving arrangements can all cause shifts in the timetable.
  • Support during adaptation stages: If an adaptation internship is necessary, as an employer, you may need to provide facilities and guidance. This requires sufficient capacity within the organization to provide this guidance.
  • Language barriers: Although a B2 certificate is officially required, practice shows that therapists with an active level of B1 can often get off to a good start. Medical terminology is often learned quickly in daily practice. With a supportive team, new employees can further develop their language skills while working..
