Found your dream job in Switzerland? Great! Then it's time for the next step: arranging your Swiss health insurance. As soon as you move to Switzerland, your current insurances expire. Don't worry, takeoff is here for you at this important step.

Basic insurance and additional options

Just like in the Netherlands, you have compulsory basic insurance in Switzerland and you can opt for additional packages. In this article, we dive into these additional insurances. Would you like to know more about Swiss basic insurance first? Be sure to check out our article about Swiss basic health insurance!

What additional health insurances are available in Switzerland?

In Switzerland, you can choose from different categories of supplementary insurance. Here's an overview of the most important options:

1. Complementary medical care

This insurance covers what is not included in the basic insurance, such as alternative medicine and care abroad.
What is reimbursed?

- Alternative treatments such as acupuncture, homeopathy and naturopathy
- Eyeglasses and contact lenses plus extra physiotherapy treatments
- Medical treatments abroad and care in other Swiss cantons

2. Dental insurance

Swiss basic insurance does not cover dental care. With additional dental insurance, you can protect your teeth and wallet against unexpected costs. What does dental insurance cover?

- Regular checks and refills plus preventative treatments
- Larger interventions such as root canal treatments and crowns
- Orthodontics (braces), depending on the package chosen

Note: many Swiss dental insurances have a waiting period before you are entitled to
full fees. Therefore, arrange your insurance immediately upon arrival.

3. Hospital insurance

With only basic insurance, you will be placed in a general room in the event of a hospital stay. Supplementary hospital insurance offers more comfort and freedom of choice. Hospital insurance in Switzerland is offered in three levels:

- General Department (Basic insurance): Shared room, hospitals only in your canton of residence
- Semi-private: Room with up to two beds, free choice of hospitals throughout Switzerland
- Private: Private room with bathroom, treatment by the best specialists, extra services

4. Additional services and packages

In addition to the three main categories, many Swiss insurers offer additional modules:

- Health promotion: Reimbursements for fitness, sports clubs and preventive health checks
- Psychological health: Extra sessions with psychologist, coaching and burnout prevention
- Foreign countries & maternity care: Higher coverage abroad and extra care for pregnancy

Please note: in Switzerland, additional insurances cannot be canceled annually (as in the Netherlands). You often take them out for a longer period of time, and the insurer can reject you based on your medical history.

Our tip: CSS Health Insurance

After our own experiences and those of dozens of takeoff physios, we highly recommend your CSS. They offer complete coverage at a fair price and have a good reputation in Switzerland. That's why we've set up a collaboration with CSS for our community. CSS offers, among other things, these additional health insurance packages:

- MyFlex Outpatient Insurance: Covers outpatient treatments without hospital stays, such as psychotherapy or orthopaedic aids. Also handy: 90% reimbursement for medicines, emergency assistance abroad, and legal protection for patients across Europe.
- MyFlex Hospital Insurance: This allows you to decide which hospital you will be treated in and whether you want a private room. You also get global emergency coverage, perfect for adventurers who love to go to the mountains!
- MyFlex Alternative Medicine: For lovers of naturopathy: this reimburses you 75% of treatments by recognized alternative healers, up to an agreed maximum.
- Health promotion: This insurance supports your active lifestyle in Switzerland with reimbursements for fitness, sports, medical massages and health check-ups.
- Dental care: Protects you against high dental costs — from check-ups to corrections and everything in between.
- Death or disability due to illness: Provides financial security in the event of serious consequences of illness, including coverage for loss of income, retraining and necessary adjustments.

In addition, you can also come to them for general additional insurances, such as a
liability and household insurance.

A personal consultation? Arranged for free!

Not sure which insurances suit your situation? As a takeoff physio, you get
a free and comprehensive consultation with a CSS advisor. They explain everything you need to know about the
Swiss care system and help you put together your ideal package.
