As a physiotherapist who focuses on working in Switzerland, you will soon come across the acronym SRK. But what exactly is this and why is recognition by this organization so crucial for your career in Swiss healthcare? In this article, we explain why SRK recognition is the key to your future as a physiotherapist in Switzerland.
The Schweizerisches Rotes Kreuz (SRK) is the Swiss Red Cross, founded in 1866. What started as a humanitarian organization has now grown into the largest organization of its type in Switzerland. For you as a physiotherapist, one task of the SRK is particularly important: recognizing foreign health care diplomas.
The SRK is the only organization in Switzerland that is authorized to recognize your foreign physiotherapy diploma. No SRK recognition simply means no work as a physiotherapist in Switzerland.
In Switzerland, the profession of physiotherapist is protected by law. You can only hold this title and carry out the work with an officially recognized qualification. The SRK has been given the responsibility of the Swiss government to ensure that all foreign physiotherapists meet the same high standards as their Swiss colleagues.
The SRK looks at three main areas when assessing your diploma:
The standard physiotherapy course in Switzerland takes 4 years (5400 hours). Your education will be tested against this. Does it not meet the requirements? Then you can receive compensatory measures such as an adaptation course or an extra internship.

In addition to diploma recognition, the SRK also manages the National Register of Health Insurance (NAREG). Once your SRK recognition has been completed, you will automatically be included in this register. The NAREG is your official ticket to work in Swiss healthcare.
Patients, employers and health insurers can check in this register whether you are officially recognized as a physiotherapist. Without registering in the NAREG, you cannot claim from health insurers and therefore not actually work as a physiotherapist.
Unlike other countries, Switzerland has deliberately opted for a single central authority for diploma recognition. This has important advantages:
For many physical therapists, the SRK process initially feels like a bureaucratic obstacle. But it's actually an investment in your career:
