You've just arrived in Switzerland and are you wondering where all those nice people are hiding? Good news: they're really here! You just have to know where to look. As a physio at takeoff, you will of course immediately have a group of international colleagues around you, but a whole social life awaits you outside too.

Here are our five tried and tested ways to expand your social circle in no time.

1. Join a sports club

Swiss people love them Vereine. From football to volleyball, from climbing to rowing: every village has a handful of sports clubs bustling with activity. And did you know... These associations are not just about sports! They host BBQs, seasonal parties and fun evenings in the clubhouse.

Becoming a member usually costs a few tens a year and gives you immediate access to a fixed group of people. Bonus: Your German (or French/Italian) will improve by leaps and bounds if you stick around for a beer after training. By the way, speaking of German: did you know that you can use takeoff You can learn German with David? Perfect for preparing for those fun club nights.

Pro tip: Check your municipality's website for the Vereinsverzeichnis. Everything is clearly listed there.

2. Join a run club

Running is hot in Switzerland. Zurich, Bern, Basel, Lucerne: you'll find run clubs for every level everywhere. From relaxed jogging to serious training for the next mountain marathon. The great thing is that you don't have to be a top athlete. Most clubs have groups for beginners and experts.

After walking, the evening often ends with a drink. Perfect for getting to know people naturally. And hey, as a physio, of course, you know everything about injury prevention. Instant conversation!

Where do you find them? Instagram, Facebook, Meetup or just drop by Ochsner Sport or Decathlon. There are often flyers from local clubs there.

3. Explore the outdoor communities

With the Alps as their backyard, it is logical that Swiss people go out into nature en masse. Hiking, mountain biking, skiing, climbing: there are endless outdoor groups welcoming new faces. The Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) organises weekly tours for different levels. On Meetup.com you'll find international groups exploring the mountains together.

The beauty of being outside together? Conversations happen naturally. Especially when you overcome a steep climb together panting or enjoy the view at the top. Friendships forged in the mountains are often lifelong friendships.

Extra tip: As a takeoff physio, you can of course also join our own mountain hikes and ski outings!

4. Dive into the language courses

A language course is worth gold for your social life. You're with a group of people who, like you, are new to the country. Perfect basis for new friendships! Many language schools also organize drinks, trips or cultural activities.

Want to practice for free? Go to a language exchange. You help a local with Dutch or English, they help you with German. Win-win! Check Tandem.net or search Facebook for “Language Exchange” plus your city. Remember: a good command of the language also helps you professionally. 5. Live in a WG

One Wohngemeinschaft (shared apartment) is the fastest way to make friends. Not only do you share the kitchen and living room, but often also shared dinners, movie nights and weekend outings. Many WGs are home to international young professionals who are looking for their way in Switzerland just like you.
