The Swiss healthcare system is becoming increasingly international, especially in physiotherapy. In 2024, more than 1,100 foreign physiotherapy diplomas were recognized: a new record. This continues the upward trend in recent years and confirms what we at takeoff have known for some time: the international exchange of talent in physiotherapy is essential for Swiss health care.
The influx of foreign physiotherapists to Switzerland has been growing steadily for years. In 2024, more than 1,100 foreign diplomas were recognized, an increase of 9% compared to 2023. The year before, the percentage growth was even stronger with an increase of 22% (1,078 recognized diplomas).
In the first half of 2024 alone, 640 foreign diplomas were recognized, including 613 from EU/EFTA countries and 27 from other countries (see also the Physioswiss website). And if we look a little further back, the number of recognized foreign diplomas has doubled in ten years.
In total, there are around 15,000 practicing physiotherapists in Switzerland. The annual influx of foreign professionals is thus significant and highlights the importance of international cooperation in healthcare.
Those who want to work as a physiotherapist in Switzerland must first have their have your diploma recognized by the Swiss Red Cross (SRK). This process is generally smooth and relatively fast:
The growing number of applications is causing challenges in processing time at the SRK. This can affect the planning of both therapists and practices that want to welcome new professionals.
In general, Switzerland has a high percentage of foreign healthcare providers. With doctors for example, has 40.4% of all working doctors completed their medical training abroad. This is more than double the OECD average of 19%.
Specifically, 45.6% of doctors in Swiss hospitals are foreigners. Most of them come from neighbouring countries, with Germany representing the largest group at 19.3%. These figures show that the entire Swiss health sector is internationally oriented.
Switzerland is particularly attractive for physical therapists because of:
For Swiss practices, this offers an opportunity to attract motivated and well-trained professionals, while international therapists can take an exciting career step.
The recognition process can be time-consuming, especially for applicants who need additional measures. Despite this challenge, the trend shows that the international exchange of talent in physiotherapy continues to grow.
This development offers opportunities for the entire sector. Practices can empower their teams with international expertise, while therapists can broaden their horizons. A situation that benefits everyone. Not least Swiss patients, who get access to a wider range of therapeutic approaches.
The figures confirm what we already knew: international exchange of expertise is essential for the Swiss physiotherapy sector. With an ageing population and the increasing demand for physiotherapy care, this trend is likely to become even stronger.
At takeoff, we know both sides of the story. We supervising physiotherapists through the complex recognition process, helping to find the perfect practice and ensuring a smooth start in Switzerland. Simultaneously we support Swiss practices in finding motivated, qualified therapists who are a perfect fit for their team - without red tape and with the guarantee of a therapist who will stay for at least one year.
The result? A seamless match where everyone wins. The therapist, the practice, and ultimately the patient.
